Rising Tide
Welcome to Rising Tide - Enrichment For All

Montauk School has adopted an enrichment program based on the Renzulli Model. Joseph Renzulli, a research professor at the University of Connecticut, has created a "Schoolwide Enrichment Model" for developing children's talents. The model focuses on enrichment for all students through the use of enjoyable and challenging learning experiences. The experiences are driven by students' interests, styles of learning and higher-order thinking skills. Lessons are developed with the goal of providing students with learning educational standards and sophisticated content in an engaging way.

The students’ interest in learning about animals and local Dell Cullum’s love of wildlife was the perfect match on Valentine’s Day. Dell is an experienced wildlife handler, wildlife rescuer, and educator, who paid Montauk School a visit to talk about all sorts of different animals that can be found in our area (and some that can’t!). He brought a plethora of his own photography as well as models of the animals being discussed. Our students were so engaged in his presentation that the hour flew by before anybody knew it! We look forward to another visit from him soon, and in the words of Dell Cullum, “wildlife matters!”

- Hamptons International Film Festival Screening

Hamptons International Film Festival focuses on Compassion, Justice, and Animal Rights.
A red carpet entry was followed by a viewing of short films focusing on compassion, justice, and animal rights at an in-school event provided for the 4th and 5th grades by HIFF. School counselors were invited to conduct a short question and answer session about the films, and a learning packet was provided to facilitate post-screening discussions in the classroom. The students were enthusiastic in their response to the films, and we hope that the ethical content of the films made a lasting impact on the 4th and 5th grade students.

Creativity, collaboration and hands on exploratory activities initiated the 5th grade enrichment program at the beautiful Turtle Cove Beach, located next to the Montauk Lighthouse.
After viewing and discussing a video and images of temporary beach art, students were inspired to comb the beach and cooperatively collect rocks, sand, water and grasses to create and construct a temporary, natural drawing and sculpture in the sand.
The company of local wildlife, including the sighting of a magnificent seal, underscored the fragility and importance of respect for the sea and shoreline that we share.

- Maria Bowen - Documentary Filmmaker
-
Maria Bowen (documentary filmmaker) inspired fifth grade students via Skype to begin the process of developing their own documentary. Topics of discussion included researching, writing, filming and editing a film based on individual student interests. Maria’s personal stories of working as a production executive with a documentary company, her work on the American Masters Series documentaries on PBS, and her experiences filming while traveling to the countries of Georgia and Russia during the downfall of the Soviet Union, gave students insight to the information needed to embark on the creative and technical processes required for filmmaking.
We would also like to thank Maria Bowen for her generous loan and donation of film equipment to the Montauk School to help begin our filmmaking!
- Samples of Maria's Work
Maria shared some of her experiences with documentary filmmaking, citing a juggling festival in Georgia that she covered. Students quickly related to this topic as they are learning to juggle themselves!

- Take Two Film Academy
-
The Young Voices Workshop (provided by the Hamptons Documentary Film Festival) invited the Take Two Film Academy to Montauk School for a special in-school workshop with 5th grade. Students participated in a mini-documentary lesson focused on the history of Montauk to learn about and demonstrate how to turn research into a short film. By using stock images, footage, and recorded voice overs from the students, the presenters from Take Two did a live demonstration on how to create and edit a documentary in Final Cut Pro. The workshop also allowed for some students to participate in a live reenactment which was included in the final edit.

- Fairview Farm Corn Maze
-
Students navigated their way through the Mecox Farm corn maze guided by 6th grade curriculum-based questions. The botany of corn and its various uses were discussed, as well as its nutritional value. We learned that all the grains (corn, wheat, and rye) the farm produces can be used for cover crops (a crop grown for the protection and enrichment of the soil), animal feed, and human consumption. Farmer Harry Ludlow demonstrated the grinding of grains and provided a tasting of the farm’s delicious homemade breads. His son, Nathan, gave students a hands-on demonstration of the various tools and equipment needed to plant and harvest the grains. Students were very excited to ask the farmers questions about all aspects of the farming process. The farmers were kind enough to send us back to school with three different farm-produced flours, which we put to use in our pretzel baking project. We had an a-maize-ing time!

The Long Island Farm Bureau’s Project Food, Land People - “Breads from Around the World” and Homebaking.com’s recipe of “Bread With a Twist - Soft Pretzels”, inspired an in-school pretzel baking activity. The enriched whole wheat flour gifted by the Fairview Farm visit earlier in the month provided 6th grade students with a hands-on activity using local ingredients. In cooperative groups students shared tasks and duties, read directions, measured ingredients, timed the rise, kneaded dough and formed individual pretzel knots. Groups were responsible for problem solving and strategizing within their groups to ensure a successful outcome. Knot kidding, they were delicious!

Take Two Documentary Film Festival - Bay Street Theater
The students from the Montauk School participated in the Take Two Film Academy program at Bay Street Theater, collaborating with other local middle schools to produce a short documentary together. After viewing two professional documentaries, students had hands on experience in creating their own sound/visual effects. Students directed, edited, acted, filmed and produced a documentary using professional cameras and Final Cut Pro X. -
